Civic Auditorium

Retired Legislative Counsel Ron Nelson identified himself (foreground left, assisting with the microphone) in this photo from MFB’s 1970 Annual Meeting at the Grand Rapids Civic Auditorium. Then the organization’s west regional representative, Nelson recalls it as a year of change: the first time MFB’s delegate body convened outside the familiar home turf of Michigan State University. Over its first 50 years, the organization outgrew MSU, especially when inclement weather complicated attendance at various locations across campus. The Civic Auditorium was large enough to accommodate MFB and two affiliates—Farm Bureau Services and Farmers Petroleum Cooperative—plus a big product show.
