Golden Hand Axes

The 1980s weren’t just about awful music and fashion—they were about hatchet-wielding leaders! At MFB’s 1986 Leaders’ Conference, Young Farmer chair Gary Skinner (Gratiot County) and Women’s Committee Chair Diane Horning (Washtenaw) were honored with what appear to be golden hand axes. Bestowing the honors (blade-first??) in his last year of service was longtime MFB President Elton R. Smith. If you can shed some light on all this—including, hopefully, an explanation of the golden hatchets—please share your knowledge in the comments section below!
